GAF Standard Warranty

All GAF shingles come with at minimum a standard manufacturer’s warranty against defects. The length varies by product line — from 25 years on basic three-tab shingles to lifetime on architectural shingles like the Timberline HDZ.

What Makes GAF Warranties Different

Many roofing contractors offer a “lifetime warranty” but the details matter enormously:

  • Who backs the workmanship? Most roofers offer their own workmanship warranty, which is only as reliable as the company itself. If they close or go out of business, your warranty disappears. Metal Roofing Warranties

What does a “lifetime” shingle warranty actually mean?

In roofing, “lifetime” refers to the reasonable useful life of the product as defined by the manufacturer — typically 40-50 years for an individual homeowner. Coverage is typically prorated after the initial full-coverage period (usually 10-15 years), meaning the manufacturer covers a decreasing percentage of costs over time. The exact terms vary by product, so always read the warranty document.

Is my roof warranty transferable if I sell my home?

GAF Golden Pledge and System Plus warranties are transferable to subsequent homeowners, though coverage terms may be adjusted upon transfer. This is a real selling point when your home is on the market. Transferring the warranty typically requires notifying GAF within 60 days of the sale.

What can void my roof warranty?

Common warranty-voiding actions include having non-certified contractors perform repairs or modifications, installing satellite dishes or solar panels without proper flashing, power-washing shingles, adding a second layer of shingles over the warranted roof, and failing to maintain proper attic ventilation.
